An attractive rear end with aerodynamically defined edges

The rear end of the touring coach is characterised by the brand's hallmark trapezium-shaped rear window with integrated Mercedes star. Like every other bus or coach built by the brand, it is therefore immediately recognisable from behind as a Mercedes-Benz, even from a considerable distance.

The rear of the new Tourismo RHD, with its powerful shoulder blades and V-shaped pressed panelling, is unmistakable and athletic in design. It has been compared by aesthetically-minded observers with an ionic pillar. As with the front radiator grille, this structure leads to an attractive interplay of light and shadow.

The engine compartment is ventilated via a grille on the right-hand side (as viewed in the direction of travel). This deliberate asymmetry adds interest to the view of the rear. To the left of this is a large area suitable for the application of the name or brand logo of the bus operator.

The rear end of the new Tourismo RHD has also been subject to aerodynamic optimisation. The rear edge of the roof as well as the corner pillars taper in slightly to benefit the air flow and are finished with an air flow break-away edge – the new Tourismo has been aerodynamically optimised from tip to tail. In order that this should not compromise the passenger compartment, the rear overhang has been lengthened by a minimal but worthwhile 15 mm. Taken together, all these features effectively prevent aerodynamically adverse air turbulence, while at the same time limiting the build-up of dirt at the back.

Outstanding drag coefficient for outstanding fuel consumption

Its pronounced cost effectiveness is one of the most important features of the new Tourismo RHD, as it was for its predecessor. Cost effectiveness joins form and function as the third dimension of design. The fuel-saving aerodynamics reduce costs, preserve the environment as a consequence of the lower emissions and conserve resources. With a Cd value of 0.33, the new Tourismo RHD boasts an outstanding drag coefficient that is unmatched by any other touring coach.

The wind has no chance against the perfect aerodynamics of the new Tourismo RHD, ensuring a further saving of fuel with every motorway mile. Taking into account the weight reduction of around 200 kg, the experts at Mercedes-Benz have calculated a consumption advantage of around 4.5 percent. In addition, there is the consumption advantage of the OM 470 engine generation with efficiency package, which was introduced in summer 2016. This results in a saving of up to seven percent.Assuming an annual mileage of 100 000 km, this adds up to around 1500 to 2000 litres of fuel, or about three fuel tanks full – cash in hand for operators.

Further proof of the excellent everyday viability and economic efficiency of the high-deck model is also provided by a plethora of carefully considered components. The main headlamps as well as the fog lamps have been adopted for the new Tourismo RHD from the Mercedes-Benz Actros, while the tail lights come from the best-selling urban bus, the Citaro. Both are ideally suited to the new Tourismo RHD, reduce costs and simplify the procurement of replacement parts in the event of minor damage. Removable wheel arch covers all round for the two-axle model are also designed with costs in mind.
