Mercedes-Benz Tourismo - Right-hand-drive range expanded
  • The new Euro VI-compliant Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine
  • One engine, two output ratings and three transmissions
  • Low fuel consumption, low emissions
  • Tourismo: a passenger door on each side

Mercedes-Benz is adapting the right-hand-drive version of the Tourismo high-decker to comply with the Euro VI emissions standard. The changes involve fitting the coach with a completely new engine from the BlueEfficiency Power family.

The new Euro VI-compliant Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine

In terms of output and power transmission, the new drive system for the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo is precision-tailored to the needs of British coach operators. The new in-line 6-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine has a displacement of 10.7 litres and is installed vertically in the rear.

The new engine, part of the BlueEfficiency Power generation, features two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and common-rail injection with the flexible X-PULSE injection system with pressure booster. Weighing just 990 kg and with compact dimensions, the engine is ideal for weight-sensitive buses/coaches and for restricted installation spaces.

The new engine operates very smoothly and quietly and all versions are impressively responsive and agile. It offers a high output at very low revs: at around 800 rpm the engine is already able to deliver 95 percent of the full engine torque.

One engine, two output ratings and three transmissions

For the two-axle Tourismo the new engine is available with an output rating of 265 kW (360 hp) and 1700 Nm torque or with 290 kW (394 hp) and 1900 Nm. There is a choice of transmissions: a six-speed manual transmission with cockpit joystick, the automated eight-speed Mercedes PowerShift transmission or the ZF Ecolife six-speed automatic transmission.

One noteworthy new feature is the positioning of the components in the rear: the cooler and fan are installed on the right, alongside the vertical engine, separated by a bulkhead. The generous ventilation of the engine compartment is also new. The two symmetrically positioned grilles on the new engine flap are a distinguishing characteristic of the Tourismo with Euro VI drive system.

Low fuel consumption, low emissions

For the exhaust gas aftertreatment Mercedes-Benz has opted for BlueTec6 technology in all variants: a closed particulate filter combined with the Mercedes-Benz SCR system, a system which has been successfully deployed for many years, and an oxidising catalytic converter. Cooled exhaust gases are also recirculated. As a result, emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides are reduced to a point where they are barely detectable.

The engine not only operates cleanly but economically too, as the fuel consumption figures and the dramatically reduced AdBlue and engine oil consumption figures testify. In addition operators can expect long service intervals and impressive durability.

Tourismo: a passenger door on each side

With a passenger door at the front left on the kerb side, the two-axle Tourismo is precisely tailored to British requirements. At the same time, the centre door on the right-hand side makes it suitable for use in left-hand-drive countries on the continent.
